Even though the enamel layer on year of your teeth is very hard, there are still times when something like an accidental fall or a blow to the face can actually crack one of your teeth. If the crack is shallow and limited to just the tooth enamel, Shelly Ereth Barone’s team of dentists, might recommend installing a crown to repair the tooth.

This often requires two separate appointments. First your dentist will use a drill to remove the majority of the enamel layer. This creates a post-like abutment that contains the healthy dentin, pulp and root of the tooth.

Your dentist will then form an impression of the abutment and all other relative teeth. The impression is sent off to a dental lab where your crown is custom made. Then a hard plastic temporary crown is cemented into place atop the abutment to protect it while you wait.

Later, we will call you back for a short second appointment once the dental lab has completed your permanent crown. This involves removing the temporary crown and cementing the permanent crown in place over the abutment.

With proper care and cleaning, your newly restored tooth should last you for many years to come.
