What is the temporomandibular joint?

Your lower jaw is attached to your head and held in place by a joint called the temporomandibular joint, or TMJ. Located directly in front of both of your ears, the TMJ is responsible for allowing your jaw to move smoothly as you eat, speak, yawn, and laugh. When the TMJ becomes stressed or damaged, it can cause a number of dental complications, including:

  • A stuck or locked jaw, especially when you try to open your mouth wide
  • Pain or discomfort when chewing, speaking, or yawning
  • Swelling in the jaw and facial tissues
  • Headaches and migraines

How is TMJ disorder treated?

We offer multiple treatments for TMJ in Metairie, Louisiana, based on your individual needs and the severity of your situation. Sometimes, medication and physical therapy exercises can help relieve pain and relax your muscles. One of the most common ways to treat TMJ is by making a custom night guard to prevent the grinding and clenching of your teeth, which often causes the TMJ to become strained. No matter what your smiles needs, we have a solution to help you feel comfortable once again. We encourage you to contact Dr. Shelly Ereth Barone, our friendly dentist at Shelly Ereth Barone, if you are experiencing jaw pain. We look forward to caring for all of your dental needs.
