Sensitive teeth can be distracting, and painful. Tooth sensitivity can make enjoying hot or cold foods and drinks difficult, if not impossible. And sensitivity can even interfere with brushing and flossing.

There can be many reasons for sensitive teeth. Cavities can be a cause, and so can a fracture in your teeth. If your tooth enamel is worn down, you have a loose filling or the root of one of your teeth is exposed, those are things that can cause sensitivity in your teeth. Grinding your teeth or even brushing them with a hard-bristled brush can contribute to the problem. You might even be surprised to know that using some tooth whitening products with baking soda and peroxide can cause sensitivity.

To prevent sensitive teeth, you should visit Dr. Shelly Ereth Barone at Shelly Ereth Barone in Metairie, Louisiana, at least twice a year to have your teeth cleaned and examined. Having your teeth cleaned will remove the plaque and tartar that causes sensitivity. You should also brush twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush; and floss before bedtime every night. There are toothpastes available over the counter that can reduce sensitivity and you should select a toothpaste with fluoride. Dr. Barone may prescribe a brush-on fluoride gel or rinse that you can use at home, or he may decide to paint a fluoride varnish directly onto your teeth. We may recommend bonding your teeth, or if necessary gum grafts or root canals.
